New York State Vehicle Inspections

Sonny's Auto Repair is an official New York State Vehicle Inspection Station.

All vehicles registered in the State of New York must undergo an annual, official safety and emissions inspection.  Regardless of when the last inspection was when you register a vehicle, you have ten days to complete a new vehicle inspection.

Having cars and light trucks inspected on an annual basis ensures that every vehicle registered in the State of New York meets the minimum standards for safe operation on public streets and highways. A yearly inspection also ensures that engines remain within the acceptable range of pollutants to help control the levels of air pollution.

New York State Vehicle Inspection Requirements

Owners of cars and light trucks must have the vehicle inspection at an official inspection station, such as Sonny's Auto Repair, and conducted by a certified inspector.  The cost of an inspection, pass or fail, is controlled by the State of New York.  The cost of the inspection depends on the vehicle type and other characteristics, such as weight.

You can find the current fee schedule for New York State Vehicle Inspections on the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Website.  (This link from the NYS DMV website opens as a PDF).

If your vehicle fails either the safety inspection or the emissions test, we will require your authorization to begin any repairs.  You are not required to have your car repaired at the same station that performed the inspection.  However, you will not receive an inspection sticker until making the necessary repairs and completing a successful inspection.

Safety Inspection

The safety inspection checks that all significant systems and safety features are in proper working order.  If you have a lit "check engine" light on your dashboard that does not clear on its own or after the vehicle computer is reset, you must repair the vehicle.  A car cannot pass inspection with an illuminated Check Engine light.

"Check Engine" Versus "Maintenance Required"

Remember that your Check Engine light and Maintenance Required light are two different things. "Check Engine" means that there is an issue with a monitored system. "Maintenance Required" means you are past the recommended mileage and time to have your engine oil changed and scheduled maintenance performed.  Would you please check with us if you are not sure what any lights on your dashboard refer to?

Oil CHanges

The single most important thing you can do for your car or truck is to keep up with its basic needs.

Brakes

Your brakes are the most important feature of your car.  If you can’t stop, it is going to be a bad day.

Tires

Your car is a complex network of systems with the sole purpose of getting the wheels to turn or stop.

Suspension

A vehicle suspension system supports a vehicle’s handling of the road and gives you a smooth ride.

Another States Inspection is acceptable until it expires if you just moved to New York.

If you just moved to New York State, the emissions and safety inspections performed in the state of your previous residence is valid until it expires or until one year after you register the vehicle in the State of New York, whichever comes first.  After you register your car or light truck in New York State and your previous inspection expires, you are required to have your vehicle inspected by a registered New York State Inspection Station, such as Sonny's Auto Repair.
